The origins of space may go back to medieval times.
The building was the seat of power in the Kingdom of the Algarve, having been destroyed by the 1755 earthquake.
In the area where it was located, there is a Manueline-style window from the 16th century where, according to tradition, King D. Sebastião attended the last mass and the boarding of the troops, before leaving for Morocco in 1578.
